FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Today, the Hon. Michelle Rempel Garner, Member of Parliament for Calgary Nose Hill, supported by Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, tabled her e-petition calling on the Liberal government to reverse their firearms ban.

“Today, I am proud to stand with nearly a quarter of a million Canadians who signed my e-petition calling on the Liberals to do better,” said Rempel Garner. “This petition calls on the Liberals to do something to stop firearms violence and acknowledge that law-abiding firearms owners should not be the target. We know that the best way to stop firearms violence in Canada is to stop the importation of illegal firearms into Canada and crack down on gang violence.”

This petition is the largest e-petition in Canadian history with signatures from across Canada. The signatories of this petition are not only calling on Justin Trudeau to scrap his firearms ban, but also to go after those who illegally acquire firearms. Firearms violence must stop in Canada, and the Trudeau Liberal government has failed to take action on this issue.

“The reality is, the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with illegally obtained firearms,” said Rempel Garner. “Taking firearms away from law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop dangerous criminals and gangs who obtain their guns illegally.”

Recently, the Trudeau Liberals voted against a Private Member’s Bill that would have imposed tougher sentences for criminals smuggling or who are found in possession of illegal firearms. This was common-sense legislation that would have tackled the true cause of firearm crime in Canada, illegal guns and gangs.

“Conservatives are committed to reviewing existing firearms legislation to ensure it focuses on dealing with criminals rather than making life more difficult for law-abiding firearms owners and retailers,” said Rempel Garner. “We have, and will always, support common-sense firearms policies that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals while standing up for law-abiding firearms owners.”
